One of the main reasons I have interest in Nutrition is due to an adventure I had that started when I lived in California. I had just received my license to be a CNA (certified nursing assistant). I was so happy! I loved working in the convalescent home, especially with the alzheimer's patients.
This job was seasonal as I had a contract job most of the year. The nursing was just something to I enjoyed. Just like everyone else I had to get the Hepatitis B vaccine...it was a series of 3 shots.
I was one of a very few who had an allergic reaction. I had a total of 2 of the 3 shots. The third, I was told, would have put me into cardiac arrest if I would have had it. I won't go into all the details of my adventure, but it was traumatic. I became the government's Lab Rat. I was flown around to doctors for ALL kinds of tests. I went througth VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System), lawsuit with the Department of Justice (yeah, that's who you have to try to sue!), I had to leave my job to see their doctors (otherwise I was "refusing examination" which would drop the case), and oh so much more......
Medical doctors couldn't help me. I was in serious pain. I would try to scratch my skin off, as that felt better than the constant stinging I would feel. Then one day my body had enough and decided to start shutting down....to preserve just the brain. That was scary. I lost vision in one eye for a bit. I had serious vertigo, I couldn't keep any fluids or solids down....suddenly, all I wanted to do was find a dark corner and sleep.
At this time, my mother was seeing a doctor whom I called her "hippy doctor" as he "seemed" to just stretch her and do silly tests yet called himself a chiropractor. Actually, he is also a Kinesiologist. That day, that man saved my life. He was able to help me recover my vision, lessen the rashes and told me how to eat (my gawd, I just had to change my diet to get some relief?!?). I haven't had a full recovery, but after researching the statistical common results, and talking to parents with children affected by this...I considered myself lucky to be able to lead a mostly normal life.
I sort of forgot about all that, except when I have a flare up of rashes or achey joints, until I moved from California to Texas. My body rejected Texas LOL. I started having episodes of vertigo. It got to the point that I would be sitting in a chair, then suddenly I would fall onto the floor. I went to PrimaCare to see if it was an inner ear thing. They gave me lots of unnecessary pills and sent me on my way. Didn't help. Finally I called my CA kinesiologist to see if he knew of a kinesiologist I could see in Texas....why did I always wait until I was VERY sick before calling?!?
Enter Dr. Peter Jaillet, my Texas hero. Turns out that I have an iodine deficiency! In CA I would surf frequently. Once I moved to Texas, my salt intake fell quite a bit! A few adjustments later and a quick trip to Whole Foods and I was back on the road to recovery.
There is much more to my story, but this should give anyone interested a glimpse of why I am interested in Nutrition. It has saved my life many times. Hey, I guess surfing has saved me too!!
